Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya Vishwavidhyalaya was established by the Government of Madhya Pradesh through legislature by an Act(9, 1991) on February 12, 1991.The National statuary educational bodies such as UGC, AICTE, NCTE, IGNOU, and NCDE have recognized the academic programmes of the university.
Distance Education at Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramoday University (MGCGV) was started to impart various courses through distance mode. The university was named after Mahatma Gandhi, where the university aims at providing higher education mainly to people living in rural areas with emphasis on preparing man power devoted to upliftment of poor and down-trodden. The University has taken keen interest in exploring alternative sources of energy, developing skills in rural artisans. It undertakes academic, research, extension and training programs for the empowerment of the people with a view to ensure free flow of knowledge, techniques and technologies as a two–way process for betterment of rural life. The University provides consultancy in all aspects of rural development.
