Periyar University is a university located in Salem, Tamil Nadu, India. It was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1997. The university is named after a social reformer Thanthai Periyar. The University Grants Commissions, New Delhi bestowed the 2f status in 1998 and 12(B) status in 2005 to the university. The university is accredited with NAAC.
The Government of Tamil Nadu established the Periyar University at Salem on 17 September 1997 as per the provisions of the Periyar University Act, 1997. The University covers the area comprising the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. The University got the 12(B) and 2f status from the University Grants Commission and has been accredited by NAAC with B+ grade in 2007.
he University has 23 teaching and research departments under 5 faculties, namely Arts, Science, Commerce, Education, and Business Administration. The departments have been clustered into different schools in order to promote inter-disciplinary research.
The university is situated on the Bangalore National Highways (NH - 7), 7 km from the Salem city and easily connected by road. The campus extends to about 100 acres (0.40 km2) accommodating the administrative and department buildings.
